Requirements
The general admission requirements are:
- Health Service Providers:
- For general public or private hospitals; specialty clinics and medical offices:
- The Health Service Provider must be recognized and have national qualification from the Ministry of Health, and should be enrolled in their corresponding professional college.
- The Health Service Provider must have or be in process of attaining appropriate accreditation from an accrediting body recognized and acknowledged by the government of the United States, Canada, or a country of the European Union (e.g. JCI, AAAHC, AAAASF, etc).
- Additionally, specialty clinics and medical offices must have a current and acceptable support agreement for the tending of medical complications.
- For businesses related to health and mental wellbeing:
- Businesses have to comply with the standards and requirements established by the government of the United States, Canada, or a European country.
- For health professionals:
- Health professionals must have the appropriate medical or dental specialty.
- Health professionals must be enrolled in a professional re-certification system from the respective professional college.
- Health professionals must either operate within their own nationally and internationally recognized structure or have credentials from a nationally and internationally recognized hospital.
- Tourist Services Providers (individually or in partnership):
- Tourist Services Providers must have the tourism declaration from the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT by its initials in Spanish).
- Tourist Services Providers have to have an emergency service available for the transfer of clients.
- Tourist Services Providers must have an agreement with a recognized medical facility (see point 1 of this article) to ensure prompt treatment of any post-operative complications.
- Academia (individually or in partnership):
- Academia must have an internationally acknowledged recognition by the government of the United States, Canada, or a country of the European Union, such as the Comparability Standards Compliance Certificate with medical schools in the United States.
- Goods and Services Providers:
- Goods and Services Providers must have all the operation permits required by law.
- Goods and Services Providers’ products or services must be registered appropriately.
- Goods and Services Providers’ products or services must have international official authorization or recognition.
The Board of Directors may grant, at its sole discretion, a transitional twelve-month period for compliance with some or all of the requirements. If after this period the associate has not complied with the necessary requirements to the satisfaction of the Board of Directors, the associate can be expelled from the Association.
With the purpose of promoting its associates’ quality standards, the Association promotes a “PROMED Quality Certification” that is regulated by the Board of Directors and approved by the General Assembly.
